Preliminary Work

To get started, we are focusing on five areas of work…

Sakitawak Conservation Area

Five Steps to Conservation Plan

1. Identify boundary(s) for conservation and current issues

  • Boundary(s) for conservation – N-14 Fur Block and immediately outside – historical use involving Traditional Land Use studies and mapping
  • Current issues and problems identified

2. Determine objectives for conservation

  • Determine objectives of conservation to guide the process values, needs and resources used for ecological protection and to sustain community efforts
    • Community Engagement
      • Ownership/ Pride
      • Stewardship
      • Governance
      • Capacity
    • Stakeholder Engagement
      • Building better relations
      • Seeking new partnerships
    • Economic Development for sustainable, direct community development and benefit
    • Environmental Monitoring
    • Education Development to ensure continued vested interest through knowledge sharing and learning
    • Cultural Development to include Elders knowledge and use of Michif language

3. Do an inventory of resources

  • Local – N-14 Fur Block
    • Soil
    • Water
    • Air
    • Animals
    • Plants
    • Cultural
  • Immediately surrounding N-14 Fur Block

4. Acquire science-based data on vulnerable, at risk, endangered, and all species

Engage with local Indigenous experts and partnered organizations, on acquiring science-based data on vulnerable, at risk, endangered, and all species in the N14- Fur Block and those identified from inventory of resources

  • Identify vulnerable areas, species habitat, migration patterns, and cultural use areas
  • Gather meta data for trees, plants, animals, birds, and fish
  • Protect Indigenous knowledge using OCAP principles throughout all data gathering and data sharing.

5. Analyze area and make choices based on greatest impact and need

Analyze resourced area and formulate alternatives for community in Conservation Framework planning and flexibility

After taking inventory, the resource data is studied to better understand the natural resource conditions.

Better understand the viability of the environment and how, for example, climate change is changing the environment such as water, soil, and air.

Evaluate alternatives and choose areas strongly identified as conservation and protection sites with the greatest impact and needs.
